Weld joints and symbols
Weld symbol is indicated the type of weld joint. Weld joints are classified according to the method of joining as butt joint, lap joint, strapped joint, tee joint and corner joints.
In butt joint, the two plates to be welded are placed in the same plane face to face before welding.
In fillet welding joint the two plates to be welded are place in contact each other in different planes.
The forms and dimensions of the edge preparation depends on the thickness of
the plates to be joined. No edge preparation is required for the plate thickness up-to 5mm, whereas single ‘V’ can be employed to the plate thickness up-to 20mm and double ‘V’ can be provided where plate thickness is more than 20mm.
